12-Year-Old Exposes Coalition Split On Call Clegg
Thursday 3rd July 2014
Nick Clegg labelled Prime Minister's Questions a "total farce" after being questioned by a 12-year-old girl on Call Clegg.
Jess in Wendover called LBC to put a question to the Deputy Prime Minister - and the answer put Mr Clegg in complete disagreement with coalition partner George Osborne.
Asking about whether the rowdy PMQs were setting a good example to youngsters, Osborne had earlier said that the MPs were passionate about their jobs and it was acceptable.
But Mr Clegg vehemently disagreed with the Chancellor, saying PMQs were stuck in the past.
He said:"I just personally think itís becoming a total farce, I really do.
"I think it embarrasses Westminster, itís sort of testosterone chest beating people, almost invariably men, yelling at each other. I think any normal person doesnít watch it, doesnít want to watch it, and if they did theyíd be absolutely appalled that thatís the way that the political class behaves.
"I just wish that we could just grab Westminster by the scruff of the neck and modernise it.
"Do you know what, Jess, Iím not even allowed to, when I stand in the House of Commons, Iím not even allowed to address people by their name, you have to come up with some unbelievably pompous formula, Right HonourableÖit goes on and on and on, Honourable Member for this, Learned Member for that.
"I just think the whole thing is just so stuck in the 19th century."
