999 Call Handler Helps Save Family in Hoxton Fire

Thursday 13th May 2014

A 999 call handler gave a woman with two children, trapped in a fire in Hoxton flats, life saving advice.

The call handler told the woman to put a towel under the door and open the window, keeping her calm until fire crews arrived.

The woman's two children were rescued via a ladder and she escaped down a staircase once London Fire Brigade reached the scene.

The family all suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to hospital.

Watch Manager Stuart Mackie said "The control officer did a fantastic job in keeping the woman calm and giving her life saving advice."

Around 40 people were evacuated from the block of flats on Wenlock Road in Hoxton in the early hours of this morning.

The cause of fire is being investigated.
