Antichrist

antichristI'm sure you've heard by now there are some pretty shocking scenes in this film - and it's not unfair to accuse writer/director Lars von Trier of creating something that's unpleasant, pretentious and misogynistic.  But it's also a captivating work of extraordinary power.

The first 20 minutes - dealing with the death of a child and the parents' grief - are emotionally draining.  Then, the film becomes even more intense, as the couple arrive in the antithesis of the Garden of Eden (a beautiful, but haunting setting) and their relationship disintegrates and ultimately descends into violence.

Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg are outstanding in the lead roles and make this often hard-to-watch horror tale incredibly watchable.
