Anyone for Tea?

There is nothing quite like the Great British tradition of afternoon tea. It all started with a wonderful lady called Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford who suffered from "that sinking feeling" during the late afternoon. To solve this problem she would have a pot of tea and a light snack mid afternoon.

St James's Restaurant in Fortnum and Mason - "Sundays and weekday afternoons are reserved for people taking afternoon tea and they have quite an extensive tea menu. From fine teas to breakfast teas - and one pot is plenty big enough for two to share." Helen From Croydon

Paul Patisserie/Boulangerie in Coven Garden - "A long-time English friend visiting from France had the great commonsense to pick this delightful family-run patisserie in the heart of Covent Garden to treat my children and I to afternoon tea. We ensconced ourselves in the warm, welcoming salon de thé located to the rear of the building, and soon partook of lovely, lovely French patisserie reminiscent of days gone by in its country of origin." Carmen from Cippenham

The Spence Cafe
in Stoke Newington - "I always thought how cosy and inviting this little cafe looks, and figured it would have some pretty tasty fare since it's linked to the excellent Spence bakery opposite. And I was right. It's also dead friendly, and miles cheaper than I'd imagine such a nice place to be. In an ideal world all cafes would charge just £2 for a pot of Earl Grey and a heavenly homemade date scone. Even my somewhat hard to please mother in law was well impressed. It's just really really nice." Joelle from Stamford Hill

GREAT Tea shop pic large.jpgThe Breakfast Club in Soho - "There's nothing extraordinary about this cafe, it's just that what they do do, they do well. The seasonal menu of tasty sandwiches, smoothies and soups, plus delicious iced coffee is fantastic value, while internet access, papers and Soho info add a personal touch. The chatty staff, walls lined with Polaroid snaps, stylish set-up and sociable feel make it well worth a visit." Michelle from Soho

Lemon Monkey in Stoke Newington – “Lemon Monkey is a little gastro-cafe-shop with a big communal table in the window and shelves stocked high with the fanciest organic, fair-trade, rainforest alliance certified, local produce. A typical Stoke Newington affair, really. The atmosphere is relaxed and quiet, especially considering the location on a busy bendy-bus route, at least when I visited on a Sunday afternoon. Most of the clientele seemed to have drifted in from the organic supermarket and trendy home wares stores on nearby Church Street." Benjamin from London

The Kew Greenhouse in Kew - "This cafe is great for having a coffee and a lovely big piece of homemade cake. The space is quite small and tables are packed in but the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. Perfect for a nice catch up with friends and family." Olivia from Earlsfield
