Thursday 25th July 2013

Met Police have detained a man at London Bridge - who witnesses claim was armed with a large gun or AK-47 - following a robbery at a bank nearby.

Officers were called to the Borough Market area close to Barclays Bank at around 2pm.

Eyewitnesses claimed on Twitter that the man was armed with what appeared to be an AK-47 - the below photo shows forensic officers examining what appears to be a large firearm at the scene.

Eyewitness Jackie told LBC 97.3's Julia Hartley-Brewer that everyone near the bank were told to get on the floor as the suspect tried to flee.

"The security was saying 'get down, he's got a gun, he's got a gun' everybody started getting down.

"As soon as he came out he started running towards Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital near London Bridge Station and then when people were running away - there were a lot of people in the way - so he tried to get into a business."

She described how security officers from the business he tried to enter attempted to stop him but couldn't because of the firearm.

"There was panic because he was holding a black bag in one hand and the gun in the other. He was trying to conceal the gun while he was running - it was when the other security from the other business tried to get on him he was waving it about," Jackie explained.

"There was a man when he was running who tried to tackle him - but he didn't trip him, he just made him lose his step and then he just kept on running, he just kept on going.

"He was trying to cover his face but it was a brown... I don't know what he had, a brown mask? But it didn't cover his face that well. I don't think he'd thought it through."

LBC 97.3's Joe Pike has been reporting from right outside the Barclays in Southwark.

"It's closed and police are carrying out an investigation. All they've told me is that it is a police incident. The bank is going to be closed for the rest of the day," he explained.

"I talked to an eyewitness. He told me that when he came out of the local hospital he saw the polie arrest a man and put a woman in a hospital."

Police later confirmed that a robbery had taken place:
