Rain had been forecast, but it seems the intensity of it caught many off guard.

While the heavy rain drenched the whole capital, the worst of the weather was to be found in south east London, especially Lewisham, Greenwich and Sydenham.

The London Fire Brigade have reported attending at least twenty separate flooding incidents since 2pm after downpours they described as “biblical”.

In one incident in Forest Hill, firefighters saved a man from drowning when water entered his basement flat via overwhelmed street drains.

The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings as some areas could see as much as 1.2 inches of rain fall on Thursday afternoon. The Environment Agency has also warned of the possibility of flooding.
