He made the announcement that he has written to seek nomination for a second term on Nick Ferrari's show just after 9am this morning.
Mr Johnson says it is because he wants to build on what he has achieved, stating: "When I look at the list of things we have to do, I look at the Olympics and I look at all the prospects, we've got to deliver change in London, to make something of the Olympic investments, not just for the site but for the whole of East London. This is more than just a two year job - I've only got two years left and we are going to need to keep going."
He continued: "There are transport projects we are going to need to greenlight to get up and running, all sorts of things, that frankly are just obsessing me."
When questioned about why it has taken so long to make the announcement, the Mayor said he was waiting for certain outcomes.
"I wanted to see whether we had done something serious on crime and I think we have - it's down overall 6%, on buses on transport it is down 30%. I've got a pledge to you to get it overall down 20% and that is going to be very, very hard.
"I think we have done fantastically well on housing, in spite of the recession we are on course to deliver 50,000 affordable homes. I'm very happy with the team that we've got because we are working to improve London in all types of ways."
Speaking to LBC shortly after the announcement, former London Mayor Ken Livingstone said he was not surprised: "It was always absolutely clear the Tory party would never let him go back into Parliament and they were going to make him fight again.
"The key thing here is you've got to try and defend Londoners from the cuts and there is no good Boris saying he is fighting against this. He is a comminted Conservative who fought to get this Government in office who has argued against public spending all of his life and he can't now turn round and say 'I don't think London should have any cuts just the rest of the country' that's just not credible."
