Pedro Almodovar is a master of cinema, creating enchanting characters, engrossing stories and films that are stunning to look at.
His latest opus is a tribute to Hollywood melodramas of the 1950s and the films of Alfred Hitchcock. At the centre is a heart-breaking story of love and jealousy - and three incredible performances from Lluis Homar, Penelope Cruz and Blanca Portillo.
'Broken Embraces' is a tad over-long and not quite up there with Almodovar's best work - like the recent 'Volver' - but it's still one of the best films of the last 12 months.
