Can condoms be fun? Of course!

Of course they can. Yes, they’re essential if you aren’t using any other form of contraception or protection – but that doesn’t mean to say they can’t be fun. Condoms can, trust me, be positively erotic. For my tips, read on...

1: Choose your condom
They don’t just make them plain and boring, you know!  You can get coloured condoms. You can get scented condoms. You can get male condoms in different flavours to give, shall we say, an extra kick to oral sex – anything from strawberry to pina colada. You can get male condoms with ribs and knobbles, to give her extra sensation as he penetrates; do a rehearsal before a serious session though, as different ‘sticky-out bits’ give different effects and she may not like all of them. Sadly, female condoms seem to come only in ‘rubber’ flavour and with none of the added extras – though see later note on lubricants, which can add extra taste.

2: Fit it with style
Putting the condom on (or in) is a lovely thing to do for your beloved. She can slither her way down his body, kissing all the way, then bring him erect with her hands before sliding the condom on while she kisses his balls. Or, she can put the condom in her mouth and slide it down with her lips, being careful not to tear it of course. Equally, he can lie her on her back, then turn her on with deft finger work before sliding the female condom inside - inner ring slipping just behind her pubic bone, outer ring outside the vagina - and following up with yet more kisses outside and in.

3: Use lube
Condoms, whether for her or for him, are the perfect excuse to slather on lubrication – which will almost guarantee more sensation and better orgasms. Of course use lube on the outside of his condom – and don’t forget that squeezing a little inside the tip of the condom will create friction between it and his glans. You can use lube with her condom too, on the outside to make it easier to slide into her, and on the inside to give him more sensation. There’s now a whole variety of lubes with added ingredients to make them more stimulating; experiment until you find one you (both) like. But remember that if you’re using a male latex condom, using oil based products (body oils, creams, lotions or petroleum jelly) may make the condom split. The same is true of lip gloss!

4: Let his condom keep him going longer
If you want him to keep going, particularly first time round, then using a condom can be a real help. The thicker the condom, the more it will slow him down and let him thrust more, use different strokes and experiment with different positions for much longer than usual.

5: Let her condom act as a sex toy
In some cultures - Senegal.. Brazil… India…  the female condom is seen as an erotic accessory for her, while he likes the fact that using one enhances her warmth. Plus, she  can get off on the rubbing of the outer ring on her clitoris, while he can find that the inner ring rubs his penis. You may need to experiment to get the right angle for this  – the missionary position is particularly good, but also try ‘her on top’ and him kneeling in front of her.

6: Relax and enjoy
Finally, the big ‘goodie’ of condoms is that, quite simply, they’re the best form of barrier contraception. The fact that – if you use them properly – there’s no danger of pregnancy or infection means that both of you can, without worry, concentrate on lust, lust, lust!
