Can I eat mould growing on cheese?

Question

If cheddar cheese goes white with mould, I cut it off. But I eat Brie or Stilton, which has mould in it anyway. So could I eat the mould growing on cheddar?

Answer: What you are scraping off is the fruit body of a mould and the fungus is probably still in the food you are eating. Normally, it isn’t harmful. The one that would be harmful is ergo in wheat, but that’s pretty much been eliminated in western countries. The moulds they use in moudy cheese are household moulds which are non-harmful to humans.
