Friday 13th June 2014
LBC can reveal waiting times for vital cancer tests have increased dramatically in the last year.
Nearly 1,000 NHS patients in London had to wait longer than six weeks for a test to detect stomach and bowel cancer.
LBC's Political Editor Theo Usherwood reports: "The number of patients waiting longer than six weeks for cancer tests in London has trebled in the last year.
"NHS guidelines state patients should not be waiting longer than six weeks after a referral from their GP.
"Across London in the year to April 2014, 3,481 patients waited longer than six weeks - up from just over 1,000 last year
Shadow health minister Jamie Reed told LBC that patients are suffering, saying: "It's an incredibly stressful time for any family that's going through this.
"Delays in the diagnostic rates causes real pain and anguish for people and shouldn't be happening.
"The government shouldn't be happening and I think the government should be on your show this morning explaining what they are going to do about it."
