'Dangerous Overcrowding' On Putney Bridge
Wednesday 16th July 2014
A broken down train on the District Line caused chaos during rush hour at Putney Bridge.
The key West London river crossing is closed for three months to all vehicles for repair work, but pedestrians can still walk across on the narrowed pavement.
But when the Disctrict Line was suspended between Putney Bridge and Wimbledon, hundreds of commuters were forced to walk across the bridge to Putney Rail Station.
It led to what eyewitnesses described as "dangerous overcrowding", where commuters were worried that someone would get pushed into the river.
A commuter, who did not wish to be named, told LBC: "I saw several altercations this morning and have become very concerned that someone will get pushed over into the river or a kid will get squashed.
"It's seriously overcrowded and there is nowhere set aside for people to climb over or get out if there is a panic or an accident."
