David Ward MP Defends Controversial Gaza Tweet
Friday 25th July 2014
David Ward has defended his controversial tweet, when he said he would fire rockets at Israel if he lived in Gaza.
The Liberal Democrat MP for Bradford East was suspended pending an investigation after sending the following tweet earlier this week.
The big question is - if I lived in #Gaza would I fire a rocket? - probably yes— David Ward (@DavidWardMP) July 22, 2014
But in a fiery exhange with Julia Hartley-Brewer, Mr Ward insisted he was not condoning the violence and had been misunderstood.
He told LBC: "It will be some that genuinely didn't really understand what I was saying and don't know me. And there will be others who really knew what I was saying, but just wanted to attack me to get it away from what I was referring to.
"So I'm actually supposed to not say anything if I believe that some people might misinterpret what I say?
"On that same day in a debate in the Commons, I began the debate by condemning the violence in Gaza at that time on both sides.
"I've condemned it over and over and over again. I don't think it is justified.
"What I am asking you do consider is if you are in that situation, year after year and have seen your own friends, wife, husband or children brutally murdered, what is your mindset?
"With the failure of the international community to protect them, would you not consider in that situation that it was the only thing that was available?"
