Diane Abbott: The Labour Party Check My Tweets
Monday 23rd January 2012
Diane Abbott's told LBC 97.3 her tweets are checked by the Labour Party.
Labour's Shadow public health minister apologised for any offence caused by comments she made on Twitter, after claims they were racist.
She said she had not meant to generalise when she wrote: ''White people love playing 'divide & rule'".
The MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington has told us she hass changed the way she tweets.
Speaking to LBC 97.3 this morning Ms Abbott explained that the Labour Party has "a system" for clearing tweets before they are sent out.
"The Labour Party is very clear on the sorts of policies that you're supposed to talk about for instance we're not allowed to commit ourselves to reversing any particular cut, and that has been the position right from the beginning," she explained.
The offending tweet had slipped through the net as it "was part of a conversation."
The MP went on to explain that the incident has not put her off being open with people via the social network.
"People think MPs are remote they cant meet them, they cant talk to them and I think the important thing about twitter is it opens up a whole way of MPs in the 21st century actually communicating with constituents and anyone that's got an interest in a particular issue, be it public health, health in general or even LBC maybe."
