Do pets suffer from passive smoking?

dog-smoking.jpgQuestion

Do cats and dogs suffer from passive smoking if their owners smoke? I’ve not heard of a dog having lung cancer.

Answer

** Definitive **
Name: Liz, Chingford
Qualification: I’m a vet
Answer: Yes, they can. They have lungs, so therefore, smoking is an irritant to them as much as it is to us. It seems to cause bronchitis most often and it would be difficult to conclusively prove that any lung cancer was caused by any passive smoking. When I see lung cancer, it’s often secondary to a tumour somewhere else in the body.
