Do swimmers sweat?
Question
Do Olympic swimmers sweat during and/or after their exertions?Ian, Acton
Answer
** Definitive **
Name: Daniel, St Albans
Qualification: I listened to the Mystery Hour a couple of weeks ago!
Answer: You can't sweat in the bath as your body is surrounded by water, so your skin can't control the temperature, which is the reason we sweat. So instead, you get thirsty and have a drink, thus cooling your body down. When you get out of the water, the swimmer is likely to sweat.
** Definitive (and professional) **
Name: Paul, Holborn
Qualification: Level 2, Great Britain triathlon coach
Answer: Daniel is talking rubbish. The answer definitively is yes you do. When swimming, your whole body sweats. As soon as you get hot, the body's mechanism to so sweat. If you weighed yourself after a swim, you'd be lighter, thanks to the fluid loss that came from sweating.
