Does petrol have a use-by date?

Question

Does petrol have a use-by date? If I leave my car for five years, would the petrol still be good after all that time? Or could it damage the car?
Dave, Orpington

Answer

** Definitive **
Name: David, Watford
Qualification: Race car engineer for 25 years
Answer: Dave was quite right not to answer his car. If you have put unleaded petrol into old leaded petrol, you get a horrible gluey formula created at the bottom of the tank, ruining everything in the engine. Even if you don’t have old leaded petrol, it does go stale and it tends to happen within months. Not years.
