Nick Ferrari, host of the breakfast show on LBC 97.3, has won the coveted Gold Award for Speech Broadcaster of the Year at the annual Sony Radio Academy Awards held last night.

Nick beat off competition from a host of broadcasters including John Humphrys, Evan Davis and Simon Mayo to scoop the top accolade. The Sony Radio Gold Award recognised Nick’s outstanding talent, skill and authority as a speech broadcaster on London’s biggest conversation.

Last year he hosted the first live radio London mayoral debate with the three main candidates and since then, Mayor Boris Johnson has been a regular studio guest on Nick’s show. In November, Nick broadcast live from Chicago, bringing Londoners all the results and reaction from the US elections. In January, he went back to the USA to present live coverage of the Presidential Inauguration of Barack Obama from Washington, marking the first time LBC 97.3 has broadcast from the Inauguration.

The Sony Radio Gold Award comes after Nick celebrated phenomenal success in the latest radio industry figures issued by RAJAR last week. 448,000 Londoners are now tuning into Nick every week, representing a 12% increase quarter-on-quarter.

Nick joined London’s biggest conversation in 2001 and became presenter of the weekday breakfast show. This Sony Award is Nick’s second – the first was in 2006 when he won the Sony Radio Gold Award for Best Breakfast Show. In the same year, he also won the award for Arqiva Presenter of the Year.

Nick Ferrari said: "I’m utterly delighted – not least for the Award but also because clearly the level of speech broadcasting at Brixton Prison isn’t that hot."

LBC 97.3’s Programme Director Jonathan Richards said: "Since working closely with Nick Ferrari I have become aware of just what a unique and commanding talent he is. There are very few broadcasters who are so closely involved in their own programmes, and there are even fewer who manage to swing between talking effortlessly with major politicians and the man in the street without sounding patronising. This accolade is hugely deserved and quite rightly ‘today’ Nick Ferrari is officially the UK’s top speech broadcaster."
