Eight Arrested Over Rape Of Girl Under 16

Eight men have been arrested as part of an investigation into a suspected paedophile ring in East London.

The men - all in their twenties - are being held on suspicion of the rape of a girl under 16.

Officers from Operation Sapphire raided nine addresses in east London and one in Hertfordshire following an allegation of offences between May and November last year.

The men arrested were five 23-year-olds, two 24-year-olds and a 21-year-old.

LBC 97.3's Tom Swarbrick reports: "LBC understands it's thought those arrested were broadly known to one another and are suspected of grooming their victim.

"All eight men are currently in custody at an east London police station."

DCI Adam Lowe from the Sapphire Command said: "These arrests are part of an investigation into rape and serious sexual assault carried out by a group of men in Newham and the wider east London area. Our enquiries continue.

In addition. a 26-year-old man and two woman aged 47 and 50 were arrested on suspicion of fraud in Newham and Redbridge.
