160 Year Old Fort In The River Thames For Sale
Thursday 14th August 2014
A 160 year old fort situated in the River Thames is up for sale.
There are river-side properties, and then there are river properties.
The Grain Tower Battery, which has the memorable address No.1, The Thames, is located where the Thames meets the Medway, and is up for sale for £500,00 through River Homes.
Dating back to the 1855, the former gun emplacement, which is apparently bomb-proof, has five bedrooms, two receptions and one bathroom.
Ideal for someone wishing to live out a James Bond villain fantasy, but with a 50-minute commute to the City, the building does require extensive renovation works. However, the sellers are keen to stress that potential use doesn't need to be restricted to residential, and that any entrepreneurial types may be able to think of alternative purposes for such a unique structure.
While there are obvious privacy benefits to living in the middle of a river, the location of the property does present some challenges, mainly that it can only be accessed by boat or the half-mile causeway that is accessible at low tide.
