Gadget of 2009: Apple iPhone 3GS
It wasn't difficult to pick the Gadget of the Year 2009.
I don’t agree with Petrie, who names her breadmaker as her gadget of 2009. I think they are great, but admit that mine has sat in a cupboard for three years!
Windows 7 came out, which was what Vista should have been like all along, while Snow Leopard made a good operating system even better.
But one gadget was a class above all the rest. In its original form launched just two years ago, it received a less than enthusiastic review from me and others in the media.
2008 brought us the 2nd generation. Suddenly, surfing the web at a sensible speed was possible, thousands of Apps started appearing that could do just about everything and it seemed that everyone wanted to get their hands on the touch screen wonder.
2009 and Apple unleashed iPhone 3GS. Faster than before, it gave us a digital compass for better mapping, improved camera with video, in phone editing, internet tethering, accessibility options for the blind, cut and paste and more. Apple couldn’t keep up with demand with shortages reported world-wide.
With more than 100,000 apps now available including LBC’s wonderful contribution and its simple and easy to use interface, it is little wonder that in less than three years, Apple has shaken the foundations of the mobile phone market and become the world’s most profitable mobile phone manufacturer.
2010 will be very interesting for the mobile phone industry. For Apple, they have to continue to innovate to hold onto their loyal users and as usual rumours swirl about the next generation model. The rest of the market needs to think hard, listen to mobile phone users and produce something that works like a dream. Is there an app for that?
