Gunman Arrested In Bermondsey
A man allegedly seen holding a gun through a window at a block of flats in South Bermondsey has been arrested after handing himself over to police.
Residents were instructed to stay inside their homes as Police marksmen arrived at Avondale Square Estate at just after 9.30am.
The Metropolitan Police have confirmed officers were armed although no shots were fired. Scotland Yard have told us their officers spoke with the man for a short time before he handed himself in.
They've confirmed he wasn't holding a fire arm when he was arrested but they're carrying out a search of the flat this lunchtime.
Marion Elhabib who works nearby's told LBC officers put up a large cordon along the Old Kent Road. She said: "They closed the road off and there has been plenty of armed police turning up, darting through the estate. Around 15 of us were told to leave the showroom and move to the back of the building."
Peter War, who lives on the estate, told LBC it all started when he heard the window of a flat breaking just after 9:30am.
He told LBC: "There was material on fire which was being thrown out. The fire brigade were there for not more than two minutes before they came outand later the police arrived.
"Then the rest of the window was smashed and glass was thrown across."
A stretch of the Old Kent Road, which runs next to the estate, has reopened after being closed for around two hours.
