How do spiders webs travel 10 feet through the air?

Question

In our garden we have a single strand of spiders web 10 feet from the washing line to the hedge, horizontally. How does a spider get from one to the other?
Graham, Ponders End

Answer

** Definitive **
Name: Simon, Hornchurch
Qualification: Learnt a lot about spiders to annoy my girlfriend who hates spiders
Answer: The spider will connect the web, then jump in the direction of the wind, being carried to where they want by the wind. If there is no wind, inside for example, the spider will let some out, walk across the floor and up the doorframe and then pull the web back tight again.
