How London Would Have Flooded Without Thames Barrier
Monday 9th December 2013
This is how much of London would have been flooded on Friday if the Thames Barrier wasn't built.
The Environment Agency released this shocking image of just how important the flood defence is to the capital.
On Friday, the Thames Barrier was closed as tidal surges were the highest they had been for 30 years.
Dr. Paul Leinster, CEO of the Environment Agency, said: “We estimate that at least 800,000 homes and businesses have been protected by flood schemes in the past 24 hours."
