How long to texts stay on phones?

Question

My parents don’t turn their phone on more than once a year, so if I send them a text message, will it still be there in six months when they turn on their phone?
Mark, Woking

Answer

** Definitive **
Name: John, Sevenoaks
Qualification: I’m a Customs Investigator and we do lots of telephone investigation
Answer: Under part one of the Regulation and Investigatory Powers Act, it’s kept on the mainframe of the phone company for six months and in their archive for seven years. It’s seven years as it’s actually a business record. So you’d get it on your phone within six months.
