How many people from 1966 final are still alive?

1966.jpgQuestion

Of the 100,000 people that attended the 1966 World Cup final, how many would still be alive?
Martin, Epsom

Answer

Name: Paul, Holborn
Qualification: Taxi driver, I know everything
Answer: Assuming the average age of the people attending was 25-30, that means now they will be 70-75. Life expectancy in those days was 68 and now it’s 77. So based on those figures, taking into account illness, victims of crime etc, I estimate that 20-25% of those people will have died, so 75-80% will still be alive.
(James O’Brien: Astonishing effort, but nonsense. The average age was certainly not 25-30.)
