How to avoid getting swine flu

Although it is impossible to eliminate the chances of catching swine flu, people can reduce their risk and help slow the spread of the virus.

Wash your hands regularly
People should wash their hands regularl, especially after being in busy public places. Alcohol-based gel or foam hand rubs can be very effective against viruses and bacteria.

Catch it, bin it, kill it
Catch coughs and sneezes in tissues, which you should then throw away. Do not put them back in your pocket, as the virus may linger in the material. Cotton hankerchiefs should also not be used. If you do not have any tissues, cough or sneeze into the crook of your elbow. This will help avoid spreading the virus on your hands.

Avoid touching your face
You touch your face far more often than you realise. The flu virus can linger on all types of surfaces for up to 24 hours and is easily transferred via the fingers to the mouth, nose or eyes. Stopping touching your face will reduce the chance of the virus spreading.

If you start experiencing the symptoms...
Anyone who is ill should stay at home until they feel better. Do not visit your GP, as you risk spreading the disease further.
