I can't get videos to play on my Windows PC

I have a new Windows 7 PC and I just can’t get videos to work on it using Windows Media Player. How can I fix it?

The player I always use in this situation is VLC Player. It’s a free player and they pretty much guarantee that they can download every type of video.
