In the Loop & I Love You, Man
Two very different comedies. Both are very funny, but neither is perfect.
'In the Loop' is a political satire from the same team who gave us the award-winning TV series 'The Thick of It'. It's not quite up to the standard of its television cousin. In fact, on a second viewing, the film's flaws become all too apparent. While Peter Capaldi is excellent as the foul-mouthed Downing Street spin doctor, the American cast (including James Gandolfini) are wasted and the sub-plot involving Steve Coogan doesn't really work. Ultimately, despite some great dialogue, there's a sense the film is pulling its punches. Given the subject matter, you'd like it to be sharper and more savage.
'I Love You, Man' stands up slightly better when re-visited on disc. It's a charming, if over-long comedy; an original and amusing premise, well executed by Paul Rudd and Jason Segal. The film works because these two guys are so likeable. The script is witty - and actually quite touching, without being too schmalzy or saccharin. Plus, the film features the Hulk himself, Mr Lou Ferrigno!
