Inglorious Basterds
Bizarrely, I missed this when it was released in cinemas back in August. Watching it at home, albeit on a decent-sized plasma TV in High Definition, I regretted not seeing it on the big screen. The widescreen photography is amazing.
It's probably Quentin Tarantino's most visually impressive film, and certainly his best since 'Jackie Brown'. He's the only director I can think of who would make a spaghetti western / war epic hybrid; an exploitation flick, shot and cut in the style of an arthouse feature.
It's hugely enjoyable with some incredibly tense scenes and several outstanding performances - most notably Christoph Waltz as SS Colonel Hans Landa. It's no exaggeration to say he makes this movie - and I'd be surprised if he didn't receive a few nominations during awards season.
Being a Tarantino film, the dialogue's witty; the violence is brutal; and it's packed with cinematic references (Leone, Aldrich, Pabst) to satisfy the geeks!
