Islington Could Be First to Ban 'Chuggers'

Monday 9th January 2012

Councillors in Islington are considering whether to ban so called 'chuggers'.

Coined from the words Charity Muggers, chuggers could be banned from stopping people on the street under a by-law at six locations in the borough.

Labour councillor Paul Convery wants an end to this kind of fundraising at Angel, Highbury Corner, Archway, Farringdon, Holloway Road, and Old Street.

He explained to LBC why he thinks changes need to be made.

"A lot of people tell us - residents and businesses - they find this a really serious inconvenience. They feel they're harrassed, a bit threatened and annoyed and we think it is something that needs to be strictly controlled."
