New Kid on the Block

Posted by James Max on July 25, 2010 at 21:06PM

Anthony Thomson, Chairman of Metro Bank, the first new high street bank in a century joins James to discuss his new venture.

So the axe is to come out on speed cameras. Hurrah! About time too. I spoke to Ellen Booth at BRAKE who, of course, thinks we should have more of them. My view is that we need a whole re-appraisal of how cameras work, what they do and why they are there. Having said that, average speed cameras and changeable speed limits (for time and weather conditions) might be a good idea. If you look at the problems on our roads, bad driving, unroadworthy cars, no insurance and carelessness are probably just as much as a problem as speed. I am not advocating speeding but think we need to look again at what makes safe motoring rather than raising money from the targeted motorist.

I was somewhat shocked to learn that someone paid £700 at an auction for the ashes of the cat that used to appear in the title sequence to Coronation Street. Talking of animals, such a fuss over the bearskin hats. The campaigners who want them banned, well some of them are vegan so I can understand that they might want to see an end to fur hats. As a meat eating, leather wearing/using person, I think its hypocritical of me to say they should be banned if I am not prepared to see a ban on all the other animal products we use. It’s an emotive subject but I am in favour of the history and keeping the bear skin hats; they look fabulous and are part of our heritage. I am sorry if animals have to die to make them, yet if I am prepared to see animal testing or animals used for food, it’s difficult to object.

As David Cameron, various government ministers and a delegation of British business leaders head to India, I really do think this is part of a new era for our country. As one of the fastest growing economies in the world, there’s plenty we can do to improve our relations and indeed to strengthen our economy is a good initiative. After all with 1.2 billion people that provides an excellent marketplace for our goods and services.

I was also joined by Anthony Thomson the co founder and Chairman of Metrobank www.metrobankonline.co.uk the first new high street retail bank to launch for nearly 150 years. And Dr David Kuo from The Motley fool joined me to answer your financial questions www.fool.co.uk

They were both positive and apparently the FTSE 100 will rise this week. I shall be looking out to see how the launch of MetroBank goes and we wish them luck.

I am back for Breakfast on Saturday morning from 7am
