Today I learnt that you can hire Gordon Brown to come and speak at an event for $100,000, to eat asparagus with your left hand and that we went to war in Iraq for humanitarian reasons.
It’s the last point that I was most horrified by. How dare the government at the time convince our country to go to war on the assumption that there were weapons of mass destruction when the motives were very different. I don’t think we will ever really know exactly what was going on in their minds and what motivated them. Having said that a few individuals have made themselves very rich by selling themselves and their secrets for money on the public speaking trail. I think it’s a national disgrace and will blight our country and economy for many years.
We also had the “A” level results today. I don’t want to take anything away from our best and hardest working students. Yet I do think some are being conned by a lowering of educational standards and a false delusion that university is the answer to everything and everyone when when it isn’t.
