Whilst I recognise the huge number of issues that TfL have to deal with the fact that they do not have a contingency plan for when routes become closed at short notice or indeed a long term building plan to replace structures rather stresses the problems we face in London. Our roads aren’t good enough. They aren’t looked after well enough. We certainly don’t have a longer term plan for replacing or investing which I think is a massive problem waiting to happen. As a world city our roads should be better, cleaner and more impressive.
Meanwhile the Olympics are almost upon us. 4000 new BMW’s arriving. Why didn’t we invent a new taxi cab powered by hydrogen? Or use the new bus… instead the Olympic authorities did an easy sponsorship deal. I think they should have agreed to have black cabs, sell off the advertising and used existing (or improved bus lanes). Oh well.. plenty more time to grumble in the run-up to the games. I just hope they prove to be the big success the powers that be say they will be.
We turned our attention to assisted suicide. An issue you feel so strongly about. What is clear is the politicians are behind public sentiment on this. Aside from a few campaign groups it seems as if as long as the right safeguards are in place you want to change the law.
Anne-Marie Minhall from our sister station, Classic FM, joined me to review today’s newspapers. We learnt that it costs £1 a minute to see a West End Show and that chocolate could become luxury if climate change does its worst. And that £2.3 billion of damage was caused by you lot over Christmas and New Year.
I am back next Saturday and Sunday for Weekend Breakfast as usual from 7am. Have a very Happy New Year!
