A good friend of mine worked out that with child care, travel, loss of state maternity leave and other attendant costs on one hand and her old wage on the other she would have effectively been working for 50p an hour if she returned to work.

Simply put, a state-imposed retirement age and state-paid pension create an equation to which the current answer - £97-a-week at the age of 65 - is spectacularly unsustainable.
