Ken: I'll Cut Fares By 7%
Monday 5th December 2011
Labour mayoral candidate Ken Livingstone claims he can wipe out the fare rise for commuters by 7% if he is elected.
Last week, Boris Johnson announced fares will go up by inflation plus one percent next year - less than originally planned.
Ken Livingstone has told LBC 97.3 it what commuters want. He said: "In Transport for London's fares accounts, there's over £200m, which is unspent. They have no plans for it, it's just sitting there. My view is, p=ut it back in London's pocket.
"We're not putting it all back - we're still leaving a safety margin. We're putting about £100m back in Londoners' pockets and given everyone is hurting, I think that's the right thing to do."
The Mayor has described Mr Livingstone's fare proposals as "ludicrous". A spokesman stated: "It is the same old Ken Livingstone. He promises one thing before an election when he needs Londoners' votes but what he does after is another story.
"He knows his numbers don't add up on this - he has already changed them once. Ken Livingstone simply can't be trusted with Londoners' money."
