London Fire Brigade Video Warns Hoarders
Thursday 15th May 2014
A new video from London Fire Brigade is warning people who hoard possessions how quickly fire can spread in their homes. New figures show hoarding has been a factor in nearly 20 fire deaths over the past three years in London.
Firefighters also attend around two
fires a week in hoarders' homes.
The short video, made in a lab, shows a very cluttered room catching fire. Within minutes the room is almost entirely alight.
Dangerously high levels of clutter also make it difficult for people to escape, and for firefighters to tackle the flames.
London Fire Commissioner Ron Dobson said:“Fires in cluttered homes can spread like wildfire, putting those who live them at serious risk of injury or worse and potentially endangering our firefighters who go to tackle them.
“We’re committed to working with people with hoarding tendencies and are calling on them and their friends and family to arrange a free home fire safety visit with us so that we can help them stay safe.”
