Londoners Must Be 'Constantly Vigilant' Over Jihadis
Thursday 28th August 2014
The Deputy Mayor of London has told LBC that people in the city need to be constantly vigilant after it was revealed hundreds of British fighters have already returned from Syria.
Yesterday, Met Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe told LBC at least 250 are already home.
Deputy Mayor Victoria Borwick says we need to do more to stop people going in the first place.
She told LBC: "The important thing is we've got to be constantly vigilentas Londoners as far as adults are concerned.
"But I'm also very concerned about making sure that we have an open enough forum in London that if people are being radicalised and people know that people are disappearing from their local communities, so people can say 'I'm worried about this person'.
"Let's try to stop them being radicalised in the first place. If suddenly people around you who are members of the local police cadets or other groups where they are young people gathering and suddenly they are not turning up any more, let's make sure we have a very open way we can ring the police to say we're concerned.
"Maybe families do know, but they are too scared to tell people."
