London's top themed restaurants
We all know that food is only a part of the experience when we eat out. This week, we thought we’d highlight a few favourites when we’ve been in the mood for something completely different. Whether you’re ready to rock, dine among tropical foliage or turn back the clock to the 50s, we’ve got something that will be right up your street.
Planet Hollywood, Haymarket
It's all change for Planet Hollywood, as the state-of-the-art restaurant opens its doors on Haymarket after a short absence. Expect the usual American food, film memorabilia and huge screens showing famous movie scenes.
The Hard Rock Café, Hyde Park Corner
Probably not for the faint-hearted, but if you want good American fast food in the most boisterous of surroundings, this could be for you. Perching on one of Hyde Park’s corners, The Hard Rock Café is festooned with the most impressive pop and rock memorabilia in the world.
The food gets the thumbs up, too. Thomas from Borough Green says, “To start, I recommend the Nachos – you will not be disappointed! If I’m hungry after that, the rack of ribs is huge and very tasty!”.
The Rainforest Café, Piccadilly Circus
This, certainly, is dining with a difference. Once you’ve selected your dish from a truly global menu (Mexican, Morroccan, Italian etc.), settle in and enjoy – if that’s the right word – the thunder, lightning, tropical rain showers and cascading waterfalls.
Paul from Soho thinks this is particularly suited for the young ‘uns: “The staff are entertaining, the setting is fabulous and the decor is outstanding”.
Sarastro, Covent Garden
From the ridiculous to the sublime, Sarastro is a must for the capital’s opera fans. Set in the heart of Covent Garden, this European menu plays second fiddle to the flamboyant drapes, murals and chandeliers of this theatre-themed restaurant. Don’t miss the opera performances on a Sunday and Monday, too.
The Sports Café, Haymarket
If you’d like to wolf down a burger while shouting at the TV, this could be the place for you. In a bar showing every conceivable sport on huge screens, this is most certainly not the first choice for a romantic meal for two. This Haymarket hang-out can get a little packed during some of the bigger internationals, but there’s never a dull moment at The Sports Café.
Eds Easy Diner, Soho
This 50s themed American diner in the heart of Soho is a real gem. If the bright neon lights don’t pull you in, the whiff of well-cooked burgers and a great milkshake should.
Andrea from Wood Green says: “Wet chips or cheesy fries? Both are fab (wet fries are chips in gravy). And if you're feeling particularly ravenous the Oreo milkshake is a must - but expect to be ten pounds heavier when you leave. Good options for veggies too”.
