LOOK: Wallaby Seen In Highgate Cemetery

Wednesday 23rd October 2013

Highgate Cemetery has been home to Karl Marx for a number of years, but the new inhabitant is very different. A different species in fact.

A wallaby has been spotted by a couple of keen-eyed visitors in west area of the north London cemetery.

Highgate zoologist Maurice Melzak, who took the video above, told the Daily Telegraph that it is probably a Bennett's wallaby, which is known to be living in the wild in the UK.

He said: "Highgate Cemetery is a mysterious and wonderful place. It already has many non-native species, including all sorts of insects and arachnids, grey squirrels, ring-necked parakeets and the occasional muntjak deer.

"So maybe the odd wallaby isnít such a bizarre notion?"
