Mail Collection Reforms Announced

Friday 8th August 2014

Royal Mail has announced planned changes to collection times for thousands of mail boxes across the UK.

Royal Mail are moving ahead with plans to bring forward collection times across Britain. These changes will include a new policy of mail being picked up by staff during daily deliveries.

Between 40,000 to 50,000 post boxes will have earlier collection times of 9 am to 3pm but with the provision of late post collection boxes within half a mile.

Royal Mail plans to keep its estate of 115,500 post boxes and has reaffirmed that it is compliant with Ofcom’s requirement that 98% of all households are within half a mile of a post box.

It has also been announced that areas of under-provision such as rural locations in Scotland and Northern Ireland will receive 2,000 new boxes under the changes.

Royal Mail has said: "Rather than decommission uneconomic post boxes, while staying within the regulated density requirement, Royal Mail will ensure their viability by improving the efficiency of its collections arrangements."
