Man Dies After Croydon Riots

A murder investigation is underway after the death of a man who was found with gunshot wounds in Croydon last night.

The 26 year old was taken to hospital but died from his injuries.

Croydon was one of several areas hit by the third night of violence on London's street, with a string of cars and buildings set alight by gangs of youths.

A 100 year old building was burnt to the ground as vandals rampaged in the borough's streets.

Owner Trevor Reeves told Sky News: "It has just provided my family and the 15 or 20 staff and families that were supported, it's just completely destroyed.

"Words fail me. It's just gone, it's five generations. My father is distraught at the moment. It's just mindless thuggery."

Scotland Yard's Trident operational command unit, which deals with gun crime in the black community, is investigating.

Croydon Central MP Gavin Barwell said he was "sickened" to see the destruction.

"My first instinct is sympathy for the businesses and residents who have been directly affected by what's happened," he continued.

"The people responsible for this wanton violence need to be brought to justice."

Every able-bodied officer is being deployed tonight and Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stephen Kavanagh has admitted the Met is being stretched "like never before."
