In 1970, James Whale created Topshop Radio, the first instore commercial radio station.

James Whale started a long and distinguished career as a phone-in chat show host at Metro Radio in Newcastle where he was the original presenter of the ‘Nightowls’ Late Evening Phone-In Show from the station's launch date in 1974.

He later moved to Radio Derby hosting a morning phone-in and then to Radio Aire in Leeds as well as having a successful commercial voiceover career.

In the 1990's, James hosted a popular simulcast television and radio show called 'The James Whale Radio Show' and 'Whale On', which was broadcast on ITV.

In 1994 he presented a weekend afternoon show on LBC in London and a weekend Breakfast Show on Atlantic 252 from Dublin, as well as working at GLR in London.

James then moved to talkSPORT and hosted regular phone-in shows from 1995 to 2008. He was best known for his late night show in the 10pm to 1am slot.

In 2000, James lost a kidney to cancer and subsequently set up a charity – The James Whale fund for Kidney Cancer.

It seeks to help reduce the harm caused by kidney cancer by increasing knowledge and awareness, providing patient information and by supporting research into the causes, prevention and treatment of the disease.
