VIDEO: Man Tries To Snatch Savings From Elderly Couple

Police are appealing for help to find a man suspected of trying to snatch a bag from an elderly couple in Brixton.

The attempted robbery took place outside Fairfield House, Dray Gardens in Lambeth around 1:55pm on Friday, 2nd September.

The couple, a man aged 83 and a woman aged 69, had been to a bank on Brixton High Street at about 1:30pm to withdraw some money, which they put into a shoulder bag. They then took the 59 bus to Effra Road.

As they walked along Dray Gardens a man came up behind them and tried to snatch the bag. The couple resisted and ended up scuffling on the ground as the suspect shouted at them to let go of the bag. When they refused to he bit the elderly man’s hand.

Incredibly the man and woman were able to resist the attempted robbery and the suspect ran off towards Hicken Road, empty handed.

The police were called shortly before 2pm and the couple were taken to hospital. The woman was found to have a fractured arm and extensive bruising, while her husband received cuts and bruising as well as an open flesh wound on his hand from being bitten.

Police are now hunting a man suspected of robbery, who is described as a stocky black man with shoulder length dreadlocks. He is around 5ft 10ins and thought to be in his late 20s. He was wearing a grey tracksuit and black wool hat during the attempted robbery.

CCTV images of a man that police want to speak to have now been released.
