Nick Clegg: London Marathon Will Be SafeThursday 18th April 2013
Nick Clegg has used his weekly LBC 97.3 show Call Clegg to reassure a worried Mum ahead of the London marathon this weekend.
Sarah in Stoke Newington rang in and explained to the Deputy Prime Minister that her 14 year old son Louie had been selected to take part in the mini-marathon - where young runners join in for the last three miles of the route.
She continued to say Louie was worried after the events in Boston - where two bombs exploded near the finish line on Monday, killing three people and wounding more than 170 - and although she has tried to reassure him, she has her own concerns.
"I can exactly know how you feel - every parent listening to this can," the Deputy Prime Minister responded.
"I've spoken to the Met Commissioner himself about this just yesterday. I've got a huge amount of confidence in the police and the security services of this country. They do an amazing job keeping us safe all the time.
"They are double, triple, quadruple checking all their arrangements for the marathon," he reassured.
Speaking during his weekly phone in show Mr Clegg said described what happened in Boston as "heartbreaking".
"Anxiety is the most natural response, certainly on your part as a Mum. Everything I've heard and seen is our world class police saying they don't think there is anything we should worry about, that all the arrangements have been put in place to make sure that it is a happy, fun, successful and safe marathon."
