Clegg: Leaving Europe Will Put Jobs at Risk
Thursday 17th January 2013
During his second historic Call Clegg show on LBC 97.3 Nick Clegg has warning the Prime Minister's strategy on Europe risks harming the economy.
Mr Clegg also warned that the Prime Minister's policy on Europe risks harming the economy.
David Cameron is expected to use a speech to to call for a re-negotiation of the UK's relationship with the EU.
The new deal is then expected to be put to a referendum in the next Parliament.
But the Deputy Prime Minister fears the economy will be damaged by the uncertainty.
"My own view is what we need to do is yes work together across party lines in Britain and with other countries to constantly reform and improve Europe - I want to see it become less bureaucratic, I want to see the common agricultural policy reformed, I want to see nonsences like the two seats of the European Parliament brought to an end," he explained live on LBC 97.3 this morning.
"But I don't think you serve the British national interests - and I certainly don't think you protect the three million jobs that are dependent on our place in Europe - if you somehow suggest you are heading to the exit door."
He went on to admit that he hasn't seen David Cameron's speech ahead of tomorrow, adding, "much of his speech he's delivering as leader of the Conservative Party" and that as Lim Dem leader he wouldn't expect to have to show Mr Cameron his speeches.
"I suspect I might see it in advance," he did add.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has joined LBC 97.3 for a weekly, live phone-in.
