Nick Clegg's Brilliant Put-Down To Boris Johnson
Thursday 7th August 2014
Nick Clegg delivered a withering put-down to Boris Johnson following the Mayor's decision to stand as an MP.
The Deputy Prime Minister said Boris treats his political career like his hair - he wants people to think he doesn't care, but he really does.
Speaking on Call Clegg on LBC, he said: "I think the thing about Boris Johnson is, despite all the clumsiness and bumbliness, he's actually a really, really ambitious politician. You don't need to begrudge him that.
"He treats his political ambition a bit like he treats his hair - he wants everyone to think that he doesn't really care, but he actually really really does care.
"Now, he'll have to come clean a bit more about the fact that in many ways, he is a much more conventional politician than he likes to appear."
Vlad from Chelsea asked whether Mr Johnson's popularity would help drag the country out of its political apathy.
Mr Clegg responded: "His tousled hair, his bumbliness, his humour, all that is great.
"All I'm saying is, behind all of that is someone who is absolutely fixated with his own political ambitions. In that sense, he's actually a very conventional politician.
"We can't really tell how people are going to react. Being a Mayor is great, you can kind of have your cake and eat it. He can lob grenades into the political debate without really having to take responsibility for stuff.
"At some point, he's going to actually have to say 'I'm going to be responsible for stuff', take the difficult decisions, all of which you know are not going to be wildly popular and then stick with them. And then we will see."
