Olympic Ticket Contract Goes to American Firm
Wednesday 8th February 2012The Mayor of London says he is disappointed a firm in America has won the contract to print the London 2012 tickets.
The firm Weldon, Williams & Lick - based in the state of Arkansas - will print up to 11 million tickets and fly the 16 tonne delivery around 4,500 miles to a warehouse in Britain.
However spokesperson for the Games has been defending the decision.
A London 2012 spokesman said: "The contract to print and fulfil the bulk of tickets for London 2012 was awarded following a thorough, competitive and open procurement process.
"The company which won the bid has worked on several previous Games, met all of our criteria around security, budget and scale and has specialist systems in place to personalise, print and package tickets on the scale we require."
It comes as staff on Virgin Trains get an extra £500 for working during the games. Staff will also receive an annual pay rise of 4.6% or £950, whichever is the greater, from April.
Additional trains will be run by the firm during this summer's event.
