On roads, what are the people with yellow tripods doing?

Question

When you’re driving, you often see a person with a camera on a yellow tripod and another one further up the road. What are they up to?
Jill, Bromley

Answer

** Definitive **
Name: Michael, Chelmsford
Qualification: Design technician and civil engineer
Answer: They are surveying road levels. There will be one guy with the tripod and a camera and the other guy will be holding a staff with measurements on it. They take measurements at different distances, so they get a good plan of the lay of the road. Once I did this when I had to super-elevate a bend.
