Buses will also be diverted as roads around Westminster and Hyde Park are closed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the Papal Visit.

TfL said drivers should avoid areas of central London on Saturday unless their journeys are absolutely necessary.

Road closures on Friday include Parliament Square, Westminster Bridge, Lambeth Bridge, Whitehall, Millbank and Victoria Street.

With the Pope attending a Mass at Westminster Cathedral on Saturday, Victoria Street, Horseferry Road and streets in the surrounding area will be closed from 7am, with buses diverted.

On Sunday there will be roads closed around St James's Park, Hyde Park Corner, Park Lane and Marble Arch.

Some road closures are also likely to be required by the police in the Twickenham area of west London on Friday and in the Wimbledon area of south west London from Thursday evening until Sunday morning.

TfL said: "We are working with the Government, the Metropolitan Police, event organisers and other agencies to ensure that people travelling to and from the events can do so quickly and safely, and to minimise disruption caused by road diversions and closures.

"Those wishing to see the Pope are advised to plan their trips well in advance, and public transport will be the easiest way to get to and from all events."
